Students are Media Smart!

Before students advertise their inventions, they learned ways to become media smart!  Students played around on the PBS website: Don't Buy It! to learn about advertisement tricks. We also viewed the ThinkQuest: Advertising to learn about slogans and testimonials.

Dr. Oaty from MIT came to visit our class today! He taught us about robotics!

We learned that robots need to be able to do three functions: sense, think and then act. What everyday items are robots?

Yesterday and today students learned about simple machines and about the famous inventor Rube Goldberg!

Students are making their own Rube Goldberg-like invention drawings. They will be on display at the Invention Fair on April 5th. Please check-in with your student about their invention. Student inventions are due April 3rd!

Check out the students' new blogs!

Students are having a blast building their own blogs. Mr. Earthtree, our technology specialist, and I teamed up to help students create their own blogs. Using their school google accounts, students used Blogger to create individual pages. Students are taking the initiative to publish their favorite writing pieces from their Writer's Notebooks. Ahhh... there is nothing like getting the students motivated to write like technology! So grateful for another new netbook cart :)

After TCAP Testing, we headed to the Telluride Historical Museum!

We learned about famous inventors that influenced our tiny yet unique town! Nikola Tesla, a famous inventor, is best known for his contributions to our modern day electrical supply system. His design of alternating currents encouraged the use of electricity in our hospital, mines and eventually public places. Can you believe Tesla helped build the world's first commercial grade alternating current power plant in Telluride? The Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant was in full swing by 1891. The electricity improved life in Telluride by making mining conditions safer. What an electrifying story!

TCAP testing starts Monday!

WE NEED HELP FILLING UP THESE SPOTS!
We wrapped up many units this week! In mathematics, we concluded our fractions unit with a cumulative assessment. In addition, we completed our story writing and reading mini-unit.  In Science, students continued being inventors with various problem-solving activities. Next week, students will not have homework, however, students bring home an invention idea web. Talk to your 4th grader about possible invention ideas! Our Invention Fair will be held on Friday, April 5th! (The day before Spring Break!)
TCAP (formerly known as CSAP) testing will begin on Monday!  All year, students have been working hard and pumping their brains full of knowledge. We have exercised every part of our brains.  The fourth grade team considers the next two weeks of testing, a celebration time! We will celebrate our hard work with extra healthy snacks, extra exercise, fun hands-on activities and one TCAP test a day. In order to be prepared for the next two weeks, we ask that each child gets a good night of sleep, eats a full and healthy breakfast, drinks lots and lots of water and exercises EVERY night!  From our Human Body Unit, we know that our brains work best under these conditions.  Please see the attached TCAP testing schedule and Snack Schedule for further information.
